In Conversation With ‘Robert Dowling’

This is the second in a series of films that Ross Casswell and I will be making for Focus On Imaging. Over the series we will be interviewing different people/photographers from within the industry.

This time we are talking Robert Dowling. Robert has had an amazing career spanning decades. He has shot ads for some of the worlds largest brands and his work is outstanding. The things he says in this film are truly inspiring and if your into photography then you love it. Enjoy…

Focus On Imaging 2012 Ad 2 featuring Robert Dowling

At the beginning of December we spent a cold couple of days at Camber Sands to shoot the second AD for Focus On Imaging 2012. This ad features world renowned photographer Robert Dowling. Roberts career (check out this film) has been one that the rest of can only prey for but the image that is being referenced  in this portrait is the cover he shot for the Pink Floyd album ‘A Momentary Lapse of Reason’. To find out more about the shoot watch the film below.

Strength and Honor

Last night the lads and I went to watch Into the Cage IV and support good friend and massive lunatic Gareth in his first ever fight (Cage fight, he’s had plenty of scraps in his time). He sorted it for me to get AAA so I could shoot. It was a last minute thing so I hadn’t really prepped for it which kind of worked for me. I just got on and shot.

I spent quite a bit of time back stage whilst the fighters were getting ready. I witnessed normal chilled out guys turn into psyched up face smashing machines! Something way different to anything I’d seen or experienced before.

You could feel the tension mounting as Gareths fight got closer. It was when his buddy Jay (who is a legend and really helped Gareth get sorted) started taping up his hands that I think it really sank in what he was about to do. A good time for a pre fight portrait I thought. We went off to on side and shot a few pics, you can see he was getting in the zone now. Things were getting serious. Warming up on the mats Gareth made final preparations with his team and then it was showtime.

I went ringside and waited for Gareths entrance and the fight to start. Still didn’t really have a plan of attack so I just went with the flow and shot what I saw. Flash was a no go. Good. The ambient was much nicer. The fight kicked off and I just went for it. The first round, in my uneducated opinion, seemed pretty evenly matched and either of them could win but come the second G smashed it and won with a mean little choke hold. The crowd went wild and for at least a second every man in the room wanted to be a cage fighter!

Well done Gareth. We are proud of you. I am really happy with the images. It was a great little unexpected project that I think I need to expand on. More to come I hope.

Tourist Trophy Strikes Again

A very big thank you goes out to the guys at Vimeo today. They have selected our (Ross Casswell, Sam Edmonds and Me) film from the TT as one of their favourites and it is now featured on the Vimeo homepage.

It has had a great response from people. Comments like “It’s rare to come across something with content on vimeo. You guys did something special here. beautiful, beautiful work” and “This is great. it’s well directed, shot and edited but it stands out from lots of content that is all of these things by having a great narrative (and fantastic access to the TAS team helps too!). Well done” make it all worth while.

Oh Buoy

Successful weekend away with the girls. We had a nice little trip to Devon. On Saturday we spent some time at the favourite, West Bay (also known as *Dorset* if you move in the right circles), watched the fireworks at Lyme Bay whilst sipping cider for the grown-ups and apple juice for the sprog.  Followed by a slightly manic bonfire.

Today we started the day snuggled in bed together to keep warm. Caravans are not always a great idea in November. Bit of brekkie then outside to collect conkers and check out some aMinals. Gracie loves conkers and aMinals.

Nice to get away as I have a Krazy busy week coming up.
